PerimenopauseRegain Your Libido Feel Alive Again
Perimenopause and Pre-Menopause is the period where you may start to suffer with these symptoms:
• Loss of Libido
• Fatigue
• Weight Gain
• Excess Facial Hair
• Sore Breasts
This is due to the slowing down of hormone production, namely oestrogen and progesterone.
It is very important to point out that peri-menopause is a fairly common condition but women are not aware of the fact that it is treatable.
Naturopathic Suggestions
As with PMS we are looking at re-balancing our hormones.
If needed I suggest to undergo a
Salivary Hormone Analysis.
This gives a clear indication of the hormone status and rules out any differential diagnosis.
More often than not there is an oestrogen dominance which causes those terrible symptoms such as fatigue, depression and loss of libido.
Weight gain can be worsened by oestrogen dominance so it is vital to have your hormones analysed before you embark on any weight loss program. If you are peri-menopausal, you have more than likely put on weight.
Vitex Agnus Castus (Chaste Tree)
Vitex Agnus Castus is the herb of choice to aid in the production of progesterone.
This herb is fantastic for normalising our hormones so we "feel normal" again and your family can enjoy your company once again. Check to see if Vitex is a
proven natural medicine for perimenopause.
Angelica (Dong Quai)
Dong Quai is the second herb of choice for peri-menopause if Vitex fails to produce results.
I have found this herb to only work in a select group of women. The action of this herb is in activating the oestrogen receptor sites.
That is, if there is too much available oestrogen then the Dong Quai blocks the receptor sites and vice versa if there is not enough oestrogen.
SAMe
SAMe
is otherwise known as S-adenosyl-L-methionine.
This product works wonders for depression and some women have found it to start working within 2 weeks.
SAMe naturally boosts our own serotonin levels.
Bio-Identical Progesterone Cream
Bio-Identical Progesterone Cream
Once again this product has proved invaluable in treating progesterone deficiency associated with peri-menopause.
Used in the luteal phase, (days 14-28) this helps replace the progesterone we are missing and gives us the good feeling that we are supposed to have.
It helps to relieve those pestful perimenopause symptoms and lets us enjoy a healthy libido, a happy demeanour and I have even had patients say that their facial hair has decreased and changed from dark hair to light once more. The progesterone pictured below is just one of many creams on the market but it is the one that has been certified (USP) and it is the one that I have had most success with.
| N.B: I had one patient tell me, two weeks after she started the cream, her sex life went from zero to WOW!
She said her husband wanted to thank me.... |
Vitamin B Complex
Vitamin B Complex
Once again there is a need for the B Vitamins. B12 and Folate for example is especially needed for the production of SAMe.
Environmental Factors
Earlier in the Women's Health section, I mentioned xenohormones. In this section I am going to explain these a little further because it is important to know how these affect your hormones and contribute to perimenopause and fatigue etc.
A xenohormone is basically a chemical that can affect our own hormone levels.
Some examples include:
-Plastics
-Pesticides, herbicides, fungicides
-adhesives and solvents
-Some meat from livestock that are fed hormones to make them grow
If you find that you are suffering from peri-menopause symptoms, take note of what you are dealing with on a daily basis.
Are you putting on fingernail polish and using polish remover every day? If so, this is classified as a solvent, which is a xenohormone.
This xenohormone problem isn't just limited to women either, men are exposed just as much as women.
Remember, men get breast cancer as well as women.
There is also an increase in prostate and testicular cancers.
Now, I am not making any claims to the causes of cancers in this discussion but i am pointing out that there are oestrogen sensitive cancers and we have to wonder why?
Remember also, when the xenohormones disrupt one hormone, we are disrupting our whole collection of hormones.
Steer clear of petrochemicals, plastics etc
