Omega 3 Fatty Acids
In a double blinded, randomized control trial done by the oesophageal research group at Trinity College Dublin and St James’s Hospital showed that taking omega 3 fatty acids were affective in combatting weight loss post surgery in oesophageal cancer patients.
Professor John V Reynolds, Professor of Surgery at TCD and St James’s Hospital claims there are 450 new cases of oesophageal cancer every year and surgery can take months to recover from.
The study concluded that the group that did not take the supplement, lost a considerable amount of weight and muscle mass. Whereas the group that took 2.2g EPA a day, retained their muscle mass and overall body weight. This supplement was given through a feeding tube up to 21 days after surgery.
Omega 3 Fatty Acids are thought to reduce the amount of inflammatory markers in the blood which reduces the stress on the metabolism. The reduced stress contributes to the body retaining it's muscle mass and weight.
