Crohn's disease is generally an Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and is often discussed alongside ulcerative colitis which is also an IBD.
To not confuse the two, I will discuss them seperately even though the symptoms often appear similar.
Crohn's disease is the inflammation of segments or the entire small intestine.
Inflammation has been seen from the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine and even the bowel.
What causes the inflammation is thought to be autoimmune.
However there are researchers who believe that it is dietary.
The inflammation can occur anywhere along the gastrointestinal tract but often occurs on segments.
There is currently no cure for Crohn's and treatment is symptomatic. The aim in treatment is to prevent relapses.
| During my research, I ocassionally find information that I think patients will benefit highly from. So in this case, I am going to refer you to a book that is going to give you the crohn's free life you desire without the use of medications.
It not only mentions natural supplements but gives you a run-down on the prescription medications that you'll want to avoid. Learn from this book what foods may trigger a relapse and what foods can control inflammation.

Symptoms of Crohn's
- Abdominal Pain
- Diarrhea
- Flatulence and bloating
- Weight Loss/Anorexia
- Low Grade fever
- Fatigue
The diagram to your right shows the small intestine, this is generally where you may find Crohn's disease.
If you have any of these symptoms but also suffer from acid reflux, you may have other gastrointestinal problems. Acid reflux is not essentially a part of Crohn's disease and must be looked at seperately. For more information on the causes and symptoms of
gastrointestinal acid reflux, click here.
(this will open a new window).
As we cannot change the genetic predisposition, we have to look at other factors that could be contributing to the gastrointestinal inflammation.
It is believed that if you have a family member with Crohn's, you are 30% more likely to develop the disease.
However, more people with IBD are seen in Western industrialized countries. This could lend a stronger arguement towards a dietary case.
As more and more people are trying natural medicines and dietary modifications,

Ulcerative Colitis is also classed as an IBD but differs slightly from Crohn's.
Colitis is largely limited to the lining of the colon rather then the entire gastrointestinal tract. It is also believed to be genetic but has a strong correlation to dietary factors like Crohn's.
Symptoms Of Ulcerative Colitis
- Abdominal Pain
- Diarrhea often with blood
- Flatulence and bloating
- Anorexia and weight loss
- Fatigue
As you can see, the symptoms appear similar to Crohn's but Ulcerative Colitis sufferers have frequent bloody stools. For more detailed information on
Ulcerative Colitis, please click here.
Ulcerative Colitis seems to be more common than Crohn's but unlike Crohn's, surgery can be performed to cure Ulcerative colitis. Because it is localized in the colon, the affected parts may be surgically removed.
When surgery is not an option, natural medicines and supplements can be used to alleviate symptoms of ulcerative colitis.

Irritabe bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder of the bowel which is characterized by the symptoms of bloating, abdominal pain and alternating constipation and diarrhea.
No one IBS sufferer has the same symptoms. Some may only have diarrhea, some may only have constipation and some have alternating constipation and diarrhea.
The cause of irritable bowel syndrome is still unknown and there is no cure or natural cure to delete this disease.
IBS can however be effectively treated with natural medicine.
Diagnosis of Irritable bowel syndrome
Althought there is no laboratory test to diagnose IBS, there are other bowel disorders that need to be eliminated before a diagnosis can be made.
Diseases that mimic IBS:
Celiac Disease
Giardiasis
Constipation
Ulcerative Colitis
Lactose Intolerance
Natural Medicines for IBS
In looking at irritable bowel syndrome naturopathically, there is much we can do to ease the discomfort and lifestyle alterations one must make.
Don't think that just because there is no known cause, that there aren't things you can do to make your life as normal as possible when you have IBS.
