Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) & Proven Natural Medicine
Naturopathic Suggestions
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and it's debilitating symptoms such as inflammation, swelling, and pain, are constantly being researched for effective natural medicines.
Thousands upon thousands of remedies have been under the microscope, so many in fact, that I wont be mentioning all of them, only the ones that have had some proof of benefit.
Or go straight to clinically
proven natural medicines for rheumatoid arthritis,
Diet
Diet is the first thing I analyze when someone with RA comes to see me.
| Write down a 3 day diary of what you woud eat on a normal day, (and no cheating...) and look through it on day 4. Does it look like a good diet?
Does it look like a meal plan that you would find in a health book? |
If not, there are some changes that need to be made because there are some 'naughty foods' that will contribute to the pain and swelling of rheumatoid arthritis.
In case you haven't read the page on osteoarthritis treatment, I will repeat the elimination diet regime very breifly here:
Or alternatively you can access the
elimination diet here.
- Get a diary to record your symptoms for 6 weeks
- Pick out a food that you feel may be worsening your symptoms
- Eliminate that food for 4 weeks
- Re-introduce that food for one week
- Jot down in your diary what happens to your symptoms
If your symptoms subside for 4 weeks then worsen with re-introduction of the food, then you may assume that this food is a trigger for inflammation or you have become intolerant to this food.
If nothing happens with your symptoms then try eliminating another food.
Known trigger foods include wheat, corn, milk, dairy products, beef, tomato, potato, eggplants, peppers.
Once you have eliminated all trigger foods, you should notice a big difference in the severity of symptoms.
GastroIntestinal Permeability
What does this mean, I hear you say?
Well, this area is a pet love of mine because I believe that in proving the status of your gut permeability, proves that what we eat affects our intestinal symptoms and contributes to disease and disorder.
Over time with a less than desirable diet, foods can cause damage to our small intestine. Our small intestine in good health, absorbs substances of certain size after digestion.
If our intestine is compromised, then it may be absorbing food substances that are too large, which in turn causes an inflammatory response from the body.
There is a simple test that can be done to determine your
intestinal permeability and risk of rheumatoid arthritis.
Once this has been determined, then I would recommend particular remedies based on the individual, these may include:
Aloe Vera Juice internally has been used successfully to alter gut permeability so that no large proteins are being absorbed and inflammation is thwarted.
Essential Amino Acids also have a beneficial effect on gut permeability.
Think seriously about having an intestinal permeability test and try and nip the inflammation in the bud before spending hundreds of dollars on medications.
Fish Oils
RA and fish oils have been used for years to treat inflammation and pain.
This is because the EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) in Fish Oil have shown to ward off inflammation.
If you intend to use Fish Oil, you will need to check the EPA content as you need quite a lot of it to make a beneficial effect.
1.8grams of EPA is needed. For a standard fish oil tablet, this would mean a daily dose of 10 capsules.
Please check with your health practitioner before starting a dose this high as there can be some interactions and implications with using fish oil and certain medications.

Antioxidants
I reccommend using a daily antioxidant to help in the repair of damaged tissue caused by inflammation.
Antioxidants act like scavengers in the body that circulate and devour 'free radicals' that are attacking our body.
Antioxidants include the following:
- Zinc
- Vitamins A, C, E
- Selenium
- Grapeseed supplement
It is often best to get an antioxidant complex that includes all of the above mentioned substances.
Fresh fruit is packed with anitoxidants
