Did you know that before you attempt a weight loss program, you need to eliminate some important factors and causes that may be preventing you from shedding excess kilos?

Many people who attempt to lose weight, jump straight into the deep end and buy magical diet pills and follow quick weight loss diets without any idea that there may be a medical reason for preventing a single kilo to be dropped.

1. Thyroid Test

This test will indicate whether your metabolism is slower that it ought to be. The thyroid produces thyroxine which controls the rate at which you utilise what you eat. Therefore, if you have a slow metabolism, then you will have trouble losing weight.

Place a thermometer next to your bed. On waking (without getting out of bed) take your temperature while you are still lying down. Keep the thermometer in your mouth for 10 minutes. 2. Hormone Test

Hormones such as extra oestrogen and testosterone will also hinder your weight loss. As we reach certain ages and our hormones change, we sometimes can have a disruption in the normally balanced endocrine system. Ask your health practitioner to conduct a hormone assay, if all normal then you may be able to eliminate hormones as a cause of weight gain.

3. Nutrition

We all know that overeating can cause weight gain but not all of us are aware of the foods we should be eating and the ones that we shouldn't. Also included in diet is the fact that you may be eating healthy food, but are you eating too much and not utilising the intake. Remember, what we don't burn off in the course of a day, our body will store in our fat cells. A potato may be a healthy vegetable but not when it's cut into strips and deep fried in oil... 4. Medications

There are a number of prescription medications that will cause weight gain and hinder any weight loss program. For example, anti-depressants are the worst culprits for packing on the pounds. Check with your doctor for alternatives that have been proven to not cause weight gain. Alternatively you can use some proven natural anti-depressants such as St. Johns Wort and SAMe.

5. Medical Conditions

There are numerous medical conditions that have caused some people to be more susceptible to gaining weight. If you have a condition that you think may be the cause then please check with your doctor.

If you have no idea whether you have a condition that may be preventing you from losing weight, please have a look at this medical condition, you may have it but don't know.

So, now that you have eliminated all of the possible causes of weight gain and you have checked with your doctor, then there should be no reason as to why you cannot lose weight by following a weight loss program and leading a healthy life style.

It is very easy for me to assume that you should know about healthy living but I understand that not everyone has been educated in nutrition. Over the generations we have adopted our parents eating and lifestyle habits, we assume that our parents know best. A very sad story has stuck in my mind for years and years about a young mother starting her child on solids. However silly this story may sound, it is true and unfortunately it is probably not an isolated case.

A young mother wanted to start her 4 month old child on solids but was not educated on what to feed the child. Whilst sitting in a McDonalds Restaurant, she began reading the pamphlet on the nutritional breakdown of a Big Mac. This young mother thinking that the Big Mac had all the vitamins and minerals needed by our bodies, ordered a Big Mac, took it home, put it in the blender and then proceeded to spoon feed it to her child.

This is just one example of how education on nutrition is vitally important. We have to pass on good eating habits for our children to escape the obesity epidemic.

Educate yourself on nutrition and you will be certain you can keep the weight off long after you have finished a diet.
